How to Pass Goethe B1 Schreiben in 2026: Templates & Scored Examples for All 3 Aufgaben

Most Goethe B1 Schreiben guides focus almost entirely on Aufgabe 1 — the private email. That makes sense. It's the longest task and the one that feels most familiar from textbooks.

But Aufgabe 2 (a forum opinion post) and Aufgabe 3 (a short semi-formal note) are where candidates quietly lose 20–40 points. Aufgabe 2 requires argumentation, not just information — and many learners accidentally format it like an email. Aufgabe 3 is only ~40 words, but one register mistake in a text that short is immediately visible.

The real challenge isn't any single task. It's managing three different text types, three different registers, and three different word counts in 60 minutes.

This guide gives you a system for all three: templates, annotated examples, and the 4 scoring criteria decoded so you know exactly where your points come from.

Format, Time, and Scoring at a Glance

Aufgabe 1 Aufgabe 2 Aufgabe 3
Task Private email to a friend Forum post — state & defend an opinion Semi-formal message (note)
Register Informal (du-Form) Neutral — no greeting, no sign-off Formal (Sie-Form)
Word count ~80 words ~80 words ~40 words
Content 3 specific points from the prompt Opinion + reasons 1–2 points from the prompt
Time ~20 min ~20 min ~10 min
Max points 40 40 20

Total: 100 points. You need 60 to pass.

The 4 scoring criteria (same for all tasks):

  1. ErfĂŒllung (Task fulfillment) — Did you address all content points? Did you use the correct text type? This is the gateway criterion. Score 0 here and the other three can't save you.
  2. KohĂ€renz (Coherence) — Does your text flow? Do you use connectors? Is there a beginning, middle, end?
  3. Wortschatz (Vocabulary) — B1-level words and phrases, not just A2 basics?
  4. Strukturen (Grammar) — NebensĂ€tze, correct word order, verb forms? Minor errors are fine if they don't block understanding.

The most important takeaway: covering all content points matters more than perfect grammar. Always prioritize ErfĂŒllung.

Aufgabe 1 — Private Email: Template + Example

The template:

  • Anrede: Liebe/r [Name],
  • Bezug (1 sentence): Reference their message — "Vielen Dank fĂŒr deine E-Mail!" / "Es tut mir leid, dass ich erst jetzt antworte."
  • Punkt 1 (2–3 sentences): First content point. Start with a connector (Also, / Weißt du, ...)
  • Punkt 2 (2–3 sentences): Second point. (Außerdem / Übrigens)
  • Punkt 3 (2–3 sentences): Third point. (Was ... betrifft, / Ach ja,)
  • Schluss (1 sentence): "Schreib mir bald!" / "Ich hoffe, wir sehen uns bald!"
  • Grußformel: Liebe GrĂŒĂŸe / Viele GrĂŒĂŸe + dein/e [Name]

Annotated example:

Prompt: Your friend Lisa wrote that she's moving to a new city. Respond to her email. Address: (1) your reaction to the news, (2) your own experience with moving, (3) a suggestion for what she should do in the new city.

Liebe Lisa,

vielen Dank fĂŒr deine E-Mail! Ich habe mich sehr ĂŒber deine Nachricht gefreut. ← Bezug: references her message, warm tone

Ich finde es toll, dass du nach Hamburg ziehst! Das ist wirklich eine schöne Stadt. ← Punkt 1 (Reaction). "dass du nach Hamburg ziehst" = Nebensatz → B1 grammar

Bei mir war es so, dass ich vor zwei Jahren auch umgezogen bin. Am Anfang war es stressig, aber nach ein paar Wochen habe ich mich gut eingelebt. ← Punkt 2 (Own experience). "Bei mir war es so, dass..." = natural B1 connector. "sich einleben" = B1 vocabulary

Übrigens solltest du unbedingt den Fischmarkt besuchen! Er ist am Sonntag sehr frĂŒh, aber es lohnt sich wirklich. ← Punkt 3 (Suggestion). "Übrigens" = connector. "solltest du" = Konjunktiv II

Schreib mir, wie der Umzug gelaufen ist!

Liebe GrĂŒĂŸe
Anna

Word count: ~95 | Why this passes: All 3 points covered ✓ | du-Form consistent ✓ | Informal Anrede + Grußformel ✓ | 3 connectors ✓ | 2 NebensĂ€tze ✓

Aufgabe 2 — Forum Post: Template + Example

Why this task trips people up: It's not an email. There's no Anrede. No Grußformel. If you write "Liebe Anna" at the top of your forum post, you've used the wrong text type — and the examiner marks ErfĂŒllung down immediately. This is the most common mistake on Aufgabe 2.

The template:

  • Opening (1–2 sentences): React to the forum topic. State your position clearly. ("Meiner Meinung nach... / Ich finde, dass...")
  • Grund 1 (2–3 sentences): First reason + example or experience. ("Erstens... / Ein Grund dafĂŒr ist, dass...")
  • Grund 2 (2–3 sentences): Second reason or counterpoint. ("Zweitens... / Man muss aber auch bedenken, dass...")
  • Schluss (1–2 sentences): Restate your position. ("Deshalb denke ich, dass... / Insgesamt finde ich...")

Annotated example:

Prompt: Forum topic — "Sollten Kinder ein Smartphone haben?" Write a forum post sharing your opinion.

Meiner Meinung nach sollten Kinder erst ab 12 Jahren ein eigenes Smartphone haben. ← Opening: Clear position stated immediately — this is what examiners look for

Erstens glaube ich, dass jĂŒngere Kinder noch nicht verstehen, wie man das Internet sicher nutzt. Zum Beispiel können sie leicht auf gefĂ€hrliche Seiten gelangen. ← Grund 1. "dass jĂŒngere Kinder..." = Nebensatz. "Erstens" = argument connector. Concrete example given

Zweitens finde ich es wichtig, dass Kinder mehr Zeit draußen verbringen, anstatt vor einem Bildschirm zu sitzen. ← Grund 2. "anstatt...zu" = B1 structure. "Zweitens" signals clear argumentation

Man muss aber auch sagen, dass ein Handy in NotfĂ€llen nĂŒtzlich sein kann. Trotzdem denke ich, dass Eltern andere Lösungen finden sollten. ← Counterpoint + rebuttal. "Trotzdem" = contrast connector. Shows nuance → strong KohĂ€renz

Insgesamt bin ich der Meinung, dass Kinder ohne Smartphone besser aufwachsen. ← Conclusion restates position. "Insgesamt" = summary connector

Word count: ~97 | Why this passes: Clear opinion with 2 reasons ✓ | NO Anrede or Grußformel ✓ | 4 connectors (Erstens, Zweitens, Trotzdem, Insgesamt) ✓ | 3 NebensĂ€tze ✓ | Counterpoint included ✓

Aufgabe 3 — Semi-Formal Note: Template + Example

Why this is deceptively hard: 40 words means every word counts. You can't pad with filler. Register mistakes (du instead of Sie) are immediately visible in a text this short. And many candidates treat it as an afterthought — then lose 10–20 points they didn't need to lose.

The template:

  • Anrede: Sehr geehrte/r Frau/Herr [Name], OR Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,
  • Grund (1 sentence): Why you're writing — direct and clear. ("Ich schreibe Ihnen, weil... / Hiermit möchte ich Ihnen mitteilen, dass...")
  • Inhaltspunkt(e) (1–2 sentences): Address the specific point(s) from the prompt. Be precise.
  • Grußformel: Mit freundlichen GrĂŒĂŸen + [Name]

Annotated example:

Prompt: Your child is sick and will miss school for 3 days. Write a note to the teacher, Frau Weber. Inform her about the absence and ask about missed homework.

Sehr geehrte Frau Weber, ← Formal Anrede — correct for semi-formal note

ich möchte Ihnen mitteilen, dass mein Sohn Max vom 15. bis 17. MĂ€rz leider nicht am Unterricht teilnehmen kann, weil er krank ist. ← Punkt 1 (absence). "dass... weil..." = double Nebensatz → strong Strukturen. All required info in one sentence

Könnten Sie mir bitte die Hausaufgaben per E-Mail schicken? ← Punkt 2 (homework). "Könnten Sie" = Konjunktiv II = polite request → correct register

Mit freundlichen GrĂŒĂŸen
Thomas Berger

Word count: ~43 | Why this passes: Both points covered ✓ | Consistent Sie-Form ✓ | Formal Anrede + Grußformel ✓ | Precise, no wasted words ✓

Time Management: 60 Minutes, 3 Tasks

Karl is done and handing over his Goethe Schreiben replies to the examiner

Recommended split:

  • Aufgabe 1: 20 minutes (3 min planning + 15 min writing + 2 min checking)
  • Aufgabe 2: 20 minutes (3 min planning + 15 min writing + 2 min checking)
  • Aufgabe 3: 10 minutes (2 min planning + 6 min writing + 2 min checking)
  • Final review: 10 minutes

The critical rule: Do NOT over-invest in Aufgabe 1. Many candidates spend 30+ minutes perfecting their email, then rush Aufgaben 2 and 3. Aufgabe 1 and 2 are worth the same points (40 each). Writing 150 words on Aufgabe 1 doesn't earn extra points - it steals time from tasks where you would have earned points.

Start with whichever task feels easiest. If emails come naturally, start there to build momentum. If opinions scare you, tackle Aufgabe 2 first while your energy is highest. Leave Aufgabe 3 for the end - it's short and mechanical.

The Goethe B1 Schreiben Phrase Pack

Aufgabe 1: Private email (du-Form):

  • Starting: "Vielen Dank fĂŒr deine E-Mail!" (Thanks for your email!) / "Ich habe mich ĂŒber deine Nachricht gefreut." (I was happy about your message.)
  • Reacting: "Das klingt toll!" (That sounds great!) / "Das tut mir leid." (I'm sorry to hear that.)
  • Sharing experience: "Bei mir war es so, dass..." (For me it was like...) / "Ich habe auch mal..." (I also once...)
  • Suggesting: "Vielleicht könntest du..." (Maybe you could...) / "An deiner Stelle wĂŒrde ich..." (If I were you, I'd...)
  • Closing: "Schreib mir bald!" (Write me soon!) / "Ich freue mich auf deine Antwort!" (I look forward to your reply!)

Aufgabe 2: Forum post (neutral):

  • Opinion: "Meiner Meinung nach..." (In my opinion...) / "Ich bin der Meinung, dass..." (I believe that...)
  • Reasons: "Ein wichtiger Grund ist, dass..." (An important reason is that...) / "Das liegt daran, dass..." (That's because...)
  • Counterpoint: "Man muss aber auch sehen, dass..." (But one must also see that...) / "Andererseits..." (On the other hand...)
  • Conclusion: "Deshalb denke ich, dass..." (Therefore I think that...) / "Insgesamt finde ich..." (Overall I find...)

Aufgabe 3:  Semi-formal note (Sie-Form):

  • Opening: "Ich schreibe Ihnen, weil..." (I'm writing to you because...) / "Hiermit möchte ich..." (I would like to hereby...)
  • Requesting: "Könnten Sie mir bitte..." (Could you please...) / "Ich wĂ€re Ihnen dankbar, wenn..." (I would be grateful if...)
  • Informing: "Ich möchte Ihnen mitteilen, dass..." (I'd like to inform you that...) / "Leider muss ich Ihnen sagen, dass..." (Unfortunately I must tell you that...)
  • Closing: "Vielen Dank im Voraus." (Thank you in advance.) / "Über eine RĂŒckmeldung wĂŒrde ich mich freuen." (I'd appreciate a response.)

The 60%+ Checklist

Run through this before you hand in your paper.

Aufgabe 1:

  • ☐ All 3 content points addressed?
  • ☐ du-Form consistent (including dein, dir)?
  • ☐ Informal Anrede + Grußformel?
  • ☐ ~80 words (not under 60, not over 100)?
  • ☐ At least 2 connectors?
  • ☐ At least 1 Nebensatz?

Aufgabe 2:

  • ☐ Clear opinion stated?
  • ☐ At least 2 reasons given?
  • ☐ NO Anrede or Grußformel?
  • ☐ ~80 words?
  • ☐ Argument connectors (erstens, zweitens, deshalb, trotzdem)?
  • ☐ At least 1 weil or dass clause?

Aufgabe 3:

  • ☐ All required information included?
  • ☐ Sie-Form consistent?
  • ☐ Formal Anrede + Grußformel?
  • ☐ ~40 words (not under 30, not over 50)?

If all boxes are checked across all 3 tasks, you are very likely above 60% — even with some grammar errors.

5 Mistakes That Cost the Most Points

1. Treating Aufgabe 2 like an email. Starting your forum post with "Liebe Anna" or ending with "Viele GrĂŒĂŸe" = wrong text type. The examiner marks ErfĂŒllung down immediately. A forum post starts with your opinion and ends with your conclusion. No greeting. No sign-off.

2. Ignoring Aufgabe 3. 40 words takes 5 minutes. Skipping it means losing up to 20 points — that alone can fail you.

3. Over-writing Aufgabe 1. Writing 150 words on Aufgabe 1 doesn't earn extra points, but it steals 10 minutes from tasks where you would have earned points.

4. Only simple sentences. "Ich finde das gut. Kinder sollen ein Handy haben." — that's A2 level. One Nebensatz per task ("Ich finde, dass Kinder ein Handy haben sollten, weil...") immediately lifts your Strukturen score.

5. Not answering what's asked. If the prompt asks "Was ist deine Erfahrung?" and you write about what you think in general, you've answered a different question. Read the content points literally.

FAQ

How is Goethe B1 Schreiben scored?

4 criteria: ErfĂŒllung (task fulfillment), KohĂ€renz (coherence), Wortschatz (vocabulary), and Strukturen (grammar). Each criterion is worth up to 10 points per task. Aufgaben 1 and 2 have a max of 40 points each. Aufgabe 3 has a max of 20. Total: 100 points, 60 to pass.

How many words do I need for each task?

Aufgabe 1: ~80 words. Aufgabe 2: ~80 words. Aufgabe 3: ~40 words. These are targets, not strict limits — but going significantly under usually signals missing content.

What's the difference between Aufgabe 1, 2, and 3?

Aufgabe 1 is a private email (du-Form). Aufgabe 2 is a forum opinion post (neutral, no greeting or sign-off). Aufgabe 3 is a short semi-formal note (Sie-Form). Each requires a different register and text type.

Can I pass with imperfect grammar?

Yes. The criteria explicitly state that errors are acceptable if they don't block understanding. ErfĂŒllung — covering all content points — carries the most weight.

How much time do I have?

60 minutes total for all 3 tasks. Recommended split: ~20 min each for Aufgabe 1 and 2, ~10 min for Aufgabe 3, ~10 min buffer and review.
