Agreeing (15 Phrases)

Agreeing is easy, but saying just "Ja" wastes an opportunity to show your German. Use these fuller responses instead.

Disagreeing Politely (20 Phrases)

This is where points are won. Many candidates only agree because they're afraid to disagree. But examiners want to see negotiation. These phrases let you push back without being rude.

After disagreeing, you need to find middle ground. These phrases help you reach agreement without giving up completely.

Every planning task requires agreeing on when and where. These phrases cover the logistics.

Are these phrases suitable for both telc B1 and Goethe b1 exams? Yes, as telc B1 and Goethe b1 exams test very similar speaking skills these phrases are perfectly suitable for both.

How many phrases should I memorize? Don't try to memorize all 100. Pick 3-4 from each category that feel natural. That gives you 20-25 phrases total, which is more than enough for the exam.

Which category is most important? "Disagreeing Politely." Most candidates only agree, which makes the conversation one-sided. Being able to push back politely shows real communication skills.

Can I mix phrases from different categories? Yes. In fact, the best answers combine them. For example: disagree ("Das ist zwar ein guter Vorschlag, aber…"), then suggest an alternative ("Wie wäre es stattdessen mit…?"), then ask for opinion ("Was meinst du?").

What if my partner uses phrases I don't understand? Ask for clarification: "Entschuldigung, was meinst du damit?" This is a legitimate communication strategy and won't cost you points.

Should I practice these out loud? Yes. Reading silently isn't enough. Say them until they feel automatic. Record yourself and listen back.
